The National Nutrition Council (NNC) of the Department of Health Region V recently conducted the 2015 Regional Nutrition Awarding Ceremony held at the Villa Caceres Hotel in Naga City on November 20, 2015. In an NNC-DOH letter dated November 11, 2015, the Council informed the LGU-San Jose that it ranked first among the municipality in the region with low prevalence (3.07%) of malnutrition.

The NNC-DOH further said that the LGU achieved the fete because of its effective and efficient nutrition program management in the municipality and the barangays. Accordingly, LGU-San Jose and other municipalities in the same category showed a consistent downward trend in the malnutrition prevalence rate for both preschoolers and school children, and sustained improvements in its nutrition program.

The municipality of San Jose was adjudged to rank first and consequently received the award and bested 7 other awardees of the same category in 2014. Tiwi, Albay ranked second followed by Labo, Camarines Norte for the third place. The other awardees include San Pascual, Masbate; Polangui, Albay; Casiguran, Sorsogon; Milagros, Masbate; and Daraga, Albay.

The award was personally received by Mayor Antonio B. Chavez and MNAO Maria Christine Remiter. Other top nutrition awards which covered 2014 performances were received by the following: Naga City for a Merit award; Bulusan, Sorsogon for the Outstanding Municipality in the Region (Green Banner Award); Sorsogon Province as Top Performing Province on Nutrition; Tabaco City and Legazpi City as Top Performing City on Nutrition in that order; Bulusan, Sorsogon; Tiwi, Albay and Baleno, Masbate in that order as Outstanding Municipality in the Province. Likewise, 23 barangays in the region that were adjudged as Top Performing Barangays on Nutrition that belong to the provinces of Albay, Camarines Norte, Catanduanes, Masbate, Sorsogon and the cities of Iriga, Naga and Sorsogon.

For the 2014 Regional Outstanding Barangay Nutrition Scholar was awarded to Syra P. Lagatic of San Agustin, Iriga City; she was followed by Jocelyn V. Buena of Panicuason, Naga City as first runner-up and Maria Cleofe S. Panti of Valencia, Virac, Catanduanes as second runner-up; Long Serving Barangay Nutrition Scholars awards went to BNS Estrella P. Nagera of Bactas and BNS Norma D. Aragon of Mocong, all in Basud, Camarines Norte. Finally, Exemplary Service Award on Nutrition Program was given to Ms. Catalina M. Austria for her 22 years of service as Nutrition Program Coordinator in Camarines Sur.

The awards were presented by Dr. Nestor F. Santiago Jr, Assistant Secretary of Health Office for Health Operations of the Department of Health. He was assisted by Dr. Emilia P. Monicimpo, OIC-Regional Director and RNC Chair of DOH. The closing remark was given by Ms. Elouisa T. Pastor, OIC-Regional Director and RNC Vice Chair of the regional office of the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG).
