Mayor Antonio B. Chavez keynotes the Secondary Schools Press Conference of the 4th Congressional District of Camarines Sur, spearheaded by the Association of Partido Secondary School Paper Advisers (APSSPA). The conference was held at the new covered court of San Jose National High School (SJNHS) on November 7, 2014 and participated in by a total of 383 participants and coaches coming from the nine out of ten Department of Education districts broken down as follows: Tinambac – 42, Goa – 100, Presentacion – 21, Lagonoy – 51, San Jose – 49, Garchitorena – 18, Caramoan – 3, Sagnay – 32, Tigaon – 67; and only the district of Siruma failed to send in delegates.
From the different districts, the participating high school institutions include Tamban National High School, Canayonan National High School and Don Servillano Platon Memorial National High School from Tinambac district; Partido State University, Goa National High School, Philippine Science High School, Pinaglabanan National High School, Juan L. Filipino Memorial High School, and Visita de Salog High School from Goa; Federico P. Condat National High School and Bonifacio D. Borebor High School from Presentacion; San Ramon Pilot National High School, Lagonoy High School, and Dahat National Vocational High School from Lagonoy; San Jose National High School, Adiangao High School, and Kinalansan National High School from San Jose; Pambuhan National High School from Garchitorena; Guijalo National High School from Caramoan; Sangay Western High School and Nato National High School from Sagnay, and La Salvacion National High School, Dr. Rodolfo Pamor Memorial National High School, San Rafael National High School, and Huyon-huyon National High School from Tigaon.
The program proper was opened with a prayer led by Ms. Adelina P. Peña, SJNHS Guidance Counselor and the singing of the national anthem by Jose P. Bombase, Jr., MAPEH Department Coordinator, followed by the opening remarks of Ms. Eden M. Alarcon, APSSPA President, welcome address by Diosdao P. Valencia, SJNHS PTA President and Ms. Rosemarie C. Luzada, Secondary School Principal-1. An intermission number was also rendered by Young Advocate Culture and Arts Performers (YACAP) then followed by the presentation of the participants by Ms. Joy G. Leonardo. Messages were also given by Ms. Preciosa R. Dela Vega, Education Program Specialist-1 in English/Journalism In-charge and Ms. Felicidad P. Bisenio, Education Program Specialist-1 in Filipino while the English Department Coordinator, Edisel Peña, introduced the keynote speaker.
In his speech, Mayor Antonio B. Chavez of San Jose, Camarines Sur expressed his gratitude for inviting him as the keynote speaker of the conference. He commended and expressed his appreciation to the officers and members of APSSPA. Likewise, he addressed the participants by citing the history of campus journalism in the Philippines and its vital role particularly in developing the journalistic skills and abilities of the students and consequent training of the future leaders. After the speech, a plaque of appreciation was given to Mayor Chavez by the Principal and Education Program Specialists in Filipino and English. Followed by an intermission number and the orientation of Contest Rules and Guidelines given by Ms. Mercedes P. Mabana, APSSPA Vice President.
The contest to be conducted between schools has eight events which include editorial, news, feature, sports, science and health writing, editorial cartooning, copy reading, headlining, and photojournalism.
